Dwarves are stout, hard-working fellows who like ale and mining. While some particularly stout dwarves favour the outdoors, most of dwarfkind prefers to live underground, happily toiling (or ruling) away beneath millions of tons of solid rock.

Dwarves look like little smiley faces that run merrily around doing what seems best to them. You do not control your dwarves directly, instead you designate tasks that need doing, and the dwarves with the appropriate labors enabled will run over and do them, assuming they're healthy and not already engaged in some activity.
